International Children's Day: history, traditions, interesting facts

On the first day of summer, many countries around the world celebrate one of the most important holidays - International Children's Day. This is one of the oldest international holidays: the decision to hold it was made in 1925 at the World Conference on the Welfare of Children. The Congress of the International Democratic Federation of Women in Paris officially approved this holiday only in November 1949. It was first celebrated in 1950, when 51 states took part in it. Since then, International Children's Day has been celebrated every year on June 1st.

The need to celebrate this day arose precisely in the late 40s due to the consequences of the Second World War. She left many children without parents and homes, forcing them to live on the streets. This led to theft and begging, and some children simply died from hunger or various diseases.

Purpose of celebration

International Children's Day was absolutely necessary at that time. Now this holiday is considered one of the most significant in Russia; not only adults, but also children themselves know about it.

The purpose of the holiday is to educate everyone about the problems and difficulties that children encounter in their lives. This day reminds us of how important it is to know and respect the rights of every child.

Problems

Children from different countries face different problems. In Europe, the negative impact of the Internet is considered a big problem. In Africa and Asia, children are at risk from hunger, war and illiteracy. It is not surprising that in such states the infant mortality rate is many times higher than average.

In Russia, children's health is deteriorating: over the past decade, the number of children suffering from various mental disorders has increased significantly. Cases of aggression, vandalism and suicide have increased among children and adolescents.

The problem of abandoned children and orphans in our country is more relevant than ever. Orphanages are overcrowded: children are abandoned or parents are deprived of their rights to raise them due to an antisocial lifestyle. Such children do not know what it is to live in a complete and loving family.

International Children's Day: history and traditions of the holiday

In 1959, the UN adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child, which included articles calling on parents, state bodies, local authorities and governments, and non-governmental organizations to recognize the rights and freedoms of children set out in them and strive to respect them. The declaration was only advisory in nature and had no binding force.

The first and main international legal document in which the rights of the child were considered at the level of international law was the Convention on the Rights of the Child, adopted by the UN on November 20, 1989. The Convention was signed by 61 countries; on July 13, 1990, the Convention was ratified in the USSR.

Children make up approximately 20–25% of the population in each country. In different countries, they are exposed to different dangers from which they need to be protected: in developed countries, these are the negative consequences of addiction to television and computers (serious studies have demonstrated that children tend to copy in life those cruel actions that they see on the screen or during computer games), in Western Europe they are concerned about the too early sexual development of children; in Japan, the main danger is seen in the destruction of traditional methods of education and the increasing penetration of Western habits and forms of behavior; in the least developed countries of Africa and Asia, children are threatened by hunger, AIDS, illiteracy and military conflicts.

According to the statistical collection “Children in Russia” published in 2010, there are more than 26 million minor citizens in our country. Every year, the child population of Russia decreases by 1 million people, and the number of children left without parental care and in orphanages increases by 4-6 thousand people a year. The total number of orphans and children left without parental care is about 714 thousand people, of which more than 136 thousand are raised in boarding schools.

According to the Ministry of Health and Social Development at the end of 2010, almost 18.5 million children (or 71% of the total number of children) attend preschool and general education institutions, spending most of their active time there.

In 2010, according to official data, 20.7% of schoolchildren had the first health group, 59.2% had the second health group, and 18.3% had the third health group, i.e. 1.8% of children had chronic diseases, the fourth and fifth health groups (disabling diseases). There has been an increase in the number of children graduating from school with a decrease in hearing acuity by 44%, with a decrease in visual acuity by 2.7 times, with impaired posture by 45%, with scoliosis by 5.7 times.

According to the report of the Commissioner for Children's Rights under the President of the Russian Federation, Pavel Astakhov, the unfavorable dynamics of the increase in the number of crimes of a sexual nature committed against minors and young children continues. In 2010, according to official data alone, more than 9.5 thousand crimes were committed against the sexual integrity of children.

The rights of children in Russia are protected by the Federal Law “On Basic Guarantees of the Rights of the Child in the Russian Federation” of July 24, 1998. The law establishes the basic guarantees of the rights and legitimate interests of the child provided for by the Constitution of the Russian Federation. The state recognizes childhood as an important stage of a person’s life and proceeds from the principles of priority of preparing children for a full life in society, developing their socially significant and creative activity, and instilling in them high moral qualities, patriotism and citizenship.

International Children's Day is always celebrated with various events aimed at drawing attention to the plight of children around the world. In our country, Children's Day is celebrated under the patronage of the Russian Children's Fund. The main guests of the holiday are traditionally orphans and disabled children, children from low-income and large families.

Flag

This is one of the few holidays that has its own flag. The green canvas depicts a planet on which stand five children of red, blue, white, black and yellow. They all reach out to each other: this symbolizes unity, despite the fact that all people are different.

Traditions

On International Children's Day, various events are organized in different cities around the world: exhibitions of children's drawings, performances by creative groups, competitions. Also on this day, sporting events are held, in which children receive prizes and colored balloons for winning. Cartoons are shown in cinemas, and children's songs are played on the radio.

Also on this day, actions are held to support children who find themselves in difficult life situations. Charity events and concerts, the proceeds of which are sent to orphanages and hospitals, have become part of International Children's Day.

For example, children with special needs need support and protection. They suffer from social attacks and the inability to receive a good education. Children with cerebral palsy, autism and other diseases suffer from misunderstanding and lack of acceptance in society, despite the opportunity to study and work. The chance for education and self-realization is also a kind of fight for the rights of the child.

Also in Russia, the “White Flower” campaign is taking place at the International Children’s Protection Center in St. Petersburg. Its goal is to raise funds for seriously ill children and attract public attention to the problems of oncology in children.
